Jack from Missouri (the “Show Me” State) … A Teacher’s Journal. I like teaching high school because of the stimulating exchange of ideas. For example, a freshman girl once entered my room and, using a rather creative comparison, announced: “This place smells worse than my crotch!” She didn’t say anything more on the subject, but the inference was clear: Her crotch was a fairly uninhabitable place. Several months ago a few boys in my senior class offered this provocative bit of news on recent medical research. They had heard, from reputable sources who were stocking shelves at the local supermarket, that there were significant advances being made in a cure for breast cancer. Apparently, said the excited boys, you could really reduce a woman’s chances of ever getting breast cancer if you “socked her in the boob.” April 20 is a new holiday for high school students across the country, or so I’ve been informed by them. On April 20, Hitler’s birthday, teenagers are supposed to have sex in their high school bathrooms. The connection between bathroom sex and Hitler’s birthday is still unclear to me, but the kids assure me that there is a connection. They don’t know exactly what it is, but they heard from somewhere, at some time, that it’s a kind of protest of some sort and anyway, who cares, it’s kind of cool to organize a national sex day in the bathrooms because it’s, like, a freak show, you know? Now, some people might be wondering why I mentioned an “exchange of ideas” at the outset of this article. Am I discussing these ideas with my students? Am I offering an alternative opinion on such a diverse range of topics? No. Not anymore. But there is an exchange of sorts going on. I’m exchanging my faith in the progress of humanity for the chance to see Hitler honored or defamed (same difference, apparently) by high school students with smelly crotches punching each other in the boob while they’re having organized sex in the bathroom. My name is Jack, and I’m a teacher in a small town in Missouri—the “Show Me” state.
